Caring for Lithium-Ion Rechargeable BatteriesUpdated 15 hours ago

How do I safely charge Westcott lithium-ion batteries?

Always charge Westcott lithium-ion batteries using the original charger and power cord supplied with your product.

To charge safely and efficiently:

  • When possible, avoid fully depleting the battery before charging. This improves battery longevity.
  • Charge at room temperature (50°F–77°F / 10°C–25°C) and never in extreme heat or cold.
  • When possible, do not perform partial charges. Charge to 100% capacity with every charge.
  • Do not leave a battery charging unattended.

Charging procedures and LED status indicators are outlined in the user manuals for Westcott products. Find manuals on our Manuals Page

How should I store my lithium-ion batteries between uses?

Proper storage extends the lifespan and safety of your batteries.

  • Remove the battery from the light or strobe during travel or long-term storage to prevent accidental activation.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Maintain about a 50% charge if storing for several weeks or longer.
  • Avoid environments with high humidity or drastic temperature changes.
  • Do not leave batteries fully depleted for extended periods of time (days or weeks). This can damage the battery, causing an overall lower charge capacity or slowing down recycling times.

For location photographers, carrying batteries in an insulated case helps reduce exposure to temperature extremes and keeps all contact points protected from damage or debris.

What affects the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries?

The average Westcott lithium-ion battery supports hundreds of full-power charge cycles before noticeable capacity loss. Factors that shorten lifespan include:

  • Frequent deep discharges (fully draining before recharging).
  • Exposure to extreme heat above 104°F (40°C).
  • Long-term storage while fully charged or fully depleted.
(Maintain about a 50% charge if storing for several weeks or longer)
  • Use with non-Westcott charging equipment.

To maximize performance, recharge when the battery reaches 20–30% capacity and store partially charged if unused for more than a week.

What safety precautions should I follow when using lithium-ion batteries?

  • Use only Westcott-approved chargers and adapters.
  • Never expose batteries to fire, water, or physical shock.
  • Do not attempt to open, puncture, or modify the battery casing.
  • Allow batteries and devices to cool before handling after extended use.
  • Inspect regularly for bulging, corrosion, or unusual odor. If found, discontinue use immediately and contact support.

Many Westcott devices include built-in heat protection systems that automatically slow recycling or disable output when internal temperatures rise above safe limits.

When should I replace a lithium-ion battery?

Replace batteries when charge capacity significantly decreases, the battery swells, or charging behavior becomes inconsistent.

  • A typical Westcott lithium-ion battery lasts between 300–500 charge cycles under normal use.
  • If you notice reduced full-power flashes per charge or excessive heat during operation, it may be time for replacement.
  • Always dispose of used batteries properly at an authorized recycling center. Never throw them in regular trash.

Replacement batteries are available for all Westcott strobes and speedlights.
