How Much Weight Can The Easy Boom Handle?Updated 16 days ago

The Westcott Easy Boom is engineered to support professional lighting setups while maintaining balance and safety. Below are the most common questions photographers ask when setting up their Easy Boom.

How much weight can the Easy Boom support?

The Westcott Easy Boom can safely support up to 15 lbs of mounted lighting equipment.

The boom arm is designed for lights and modifiers weighing up to 15 pounds when properly counterbalanced. This includes popular studio strobes, LED lights, and compatible modifiers mounted to the 5/8" baby pin.

For safe operation when using a studio boom arm for overhead lighting:

  • Keep total mounted equipment under 15 lbs.
  • Always secure the included safety wire.
  • Mount the Easy Boom to a properly rated C-Stand. Ideally, 40+ lbs
  • Align the boom parallel with the C-Stand’s longest leg for stability.
  • Add sandbags or additional weight to the legs of the C-Stand for improved stability and safety.

How much counterweight do I need for my light?

  • When using the 14" arm, you should match your light’s weight and add an additional 3.2–3.5 lbs for proper counterbalance. Not exceeding 18.5 lbs
  • When using the 28" arm, you should match your light’s weight and add an additional 5-6 lbs for proper counterbalance. Not exceeding 21 lbs.

These weights ensure the boom remains stable when the locking pin is removed.

To properly counterbalance your lighting boom setup:

  1. Weigh your light and modifier (up to 15 lbs).
  2. Add 3.2–3.5 lbs to that total.
  3. Use either the included weight bag (filled with lead shot) or weight plates.
  4. Adjust the counterweight position along the rear arm until the boom stays level.

A properly balanced Easy Boom should remain horizontal without additional support once the locking pin is removed.

Can I use weight plates instead of the included weight bag?

Yes, the Easy Boom, using the 14" arm supports weight plates up to 18.5 lbs and 21 lbs with the 18" arm.

The included weight plate bracket can hold plates with center openings between 1" and 2" in diameter. This makes it ideal for photographers who prefer solid gym-style plates over lead shot bags.

When choosing between counterbalance options:

  • Weight Bag: More compact and adjustable; ideal for travel.
  • Weight Plates: Faster to set up; consistent and durable for studio environments.

What happens if I mount a heavier modifier or strobe?

Exceeding the recommended weight limits may compromise balance, damage equipment, or create a safety hazard.

  • Always add sandbags or additional weight to the legs of the C-Stand for improved stability and safety.

The Easy Boom is engineered for controlled, properly balanced loads. Operating beyond its rated capacity can strain the extension arm, counterbalance track, or mounting hardware. It may also increase the risk of tipping if not properly aligned with a C-Stand.

If your lighting setup exceeds weight limits, consider using lighter modifiers or compact strobes.
