What is the Zoom Range of the FJ80?Updated 2 hours ago

The FJ80, FJ80 II, and FJ80 SE all have built-in zoom mechanisms. This is achieved by moving flash tubes forward and backward in their housings, changing the beam angle from a wide beam to a narrow beam.
Ideally, the zoom will match the focal length lens you have attached to your camera. Although, you are welcome to set it to whatever zoom level you need to achieve your desired look.
FJ80 and FJ80II Zoom Levels
FJ80 and FJ80II
Beam angle order from left to right:
- 24MM, 28MM, 35MM, 50mm, 70mm, 105mm
FJ80 SE and FJ80 SE S
- 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, 80mm, 105mm, 200mm
Tip: FJ80 speedlights feature a round head. With that, you can create an interesting spotlight effect both on and off camera when setting the zoom to the most narrow/telephoto and using a wider angle lens.
How to Set Your FJ80 Zoom to Auto
In speedlight mode, setting the zoom range to Auto will allow the flash to automatically adjust itself to the focal length of your attached lens. Ideal when using zoom lenses.
It is important the speedlight firmware is up to date so it can properly read the lens focal length data from your camera.
Note: The zoom auto range is limited to its predetermined zoom levels and in-between distances will not be displayed. For example, if you are using an 85mm lens then the zoom may default to 105mm since 85mm is not a built-in zoom level.
Setting Auto Zoom on The FJ80 and FJ80 II
- In speedlight mode, touch the button to the right of the mode button, it has a series of angles from wider to more narrow.
- With the zoom button selected, press the down arrow until you see "Zoom A" appear. It is now set to auto-zoom.
Setting Auto Zoom on the FJ80 SE and FJ80 SE S
- In speedlight mode, with Menu 1 displayed, press the "Zoom" button to the right.
- Notice at the top an "M" followed by a flashing zoom level. "M 24mm" for example.
- While the zoom level is flashing, rotate the command wheel to the left, counterclockwise, until the M changes to an A. With A displayed next to the zoom level, you are now in auto-zoom mode and the zoom range should change as you zoom or change your lens.
Adjusting the Zoom of the FJ80 While it is off Camera.
When the FJ80 is used off-camera as a client and is connected to an FJ-X3 M, the zoom is now controlled through the trigger itself. This makes it easy to change the spread of light without leaving your camera.
Controlling zoom on the FJ-X3 M
- Press and hold right on the directional pad (modeling light button)
- Similar to changing the power outputs of the groups, you can now change the zoom level of the selected group
- Press and hold right on the directional pad again to exit the zoom settings.
