What Stand Should Be Used With The Easy Boom?Updated 14 days ago

The Westcott Easy Boom is engineered for overhead lighting support, and choosing the correct stand is essential for safety, stability, and performance.

A heavy-duty C-Stand (40lbs+ capacity) with a 5/8" baby pin is the recommended stand for the Easy Boom.

The Easy Boom is specifically designed to mount onto a C-Stand and should be positioned with the boom arm aligned parallel to the stand’s longest leg for maximum stability.

When selecting a C-Stand for overhead lighting support:

  • Use a professional-grade steel C-Stand (not aluminum)
  • Confirm it includes a 5/8" baby pin
  • Ensure it supports at least 40 lbs load capacity
  • Position the boom over the longest leg of the stand
  • Add sandbags or additional weight to the legs of the C-Stand for improved stability and safety.

Can I use a regular light stand with the Easy Boom?

No, a standard lightweight light stand is not recommended for use with the Easy Boom.

The Easy Boom is designed to be mounted to a C-Stand, not a standard collapsible light stand. Because the boom arm extends horizontally and supports both a light head and counterweight system, it shifts the center of gravity significantly.

Using a regular light stand for boom arm photography setups can:

  • Cause tipping under uneven load
  • Stress the stand’s risers or collar
  • Create a serious safety hazard on set

How do I properly mount the Easy Boom to a C-Stand?

Mount the Easy Boom horizontally onto the C-Stand’s 5/8" baby pin and align it over the longest leg before tightening.

Before mounting, ensure the Easy Boom is fully assembled and the locking pin is securely installed in the horizontal position.

Follow these steps for safe Easy Boom C-Stand setup:

  1. Be sure the safety pin is properly installed.
  2. Loosen the tension knob at the base of the center column.
  3. Lift the Easy Boom with both hands and align the receiver with the C-Stand’s baby pin. Lower it fully into place.
  4. Position the extension arm over the largest leg of the C-Stand.
  5. Tighten the tension knob securely.
  6. Attach the included safety wire.

Always tether your light using the included safety wire before removing the locking pin and adjusting vertical position.

What makes a stand stable enough for boom arm lighting?

A stable boom setup depends on stand weight, leg orientation, counterbalance, and proper locking procedures.

The Easy Boom supports lights with modifiers up to 15 lbs and requires proper counterweighting using either the included weight bag or weight plates. Stability is not just about the stand, it’s about system balance.
