What's The Difference Between the FJ400 II and FJ400-SE?Updated 3 hours ago
The FJ400 II is a battery-operated, feature-rich strobe offering advanced sync modes like High-Speed Sync (HSS), TTL (through-the-lens metering), Freeze sync (down to 1/25,000s), Rear Curtain Sync, and more. It's designed for maximum versatility and portability in dynamic shooting environments and includes a rechargeable battery.
In contrast, the FJ400-SE is a manual-only version that does not have a native battery option, and supports Standard and Rear Curtain Sync but does not offer HSS or TTL. It’s a streamlined choice for users who rely on manual exposure settings and don’t need full automation or advanced sync options.
Does the FJ400-SE Support HSS or TTL?
Unlike the FJ400 II, which allows syncing up to 1/8000s using HSS and metered flash output using TTL, the FJ400-SE maxes out at standard sync speeds (typically 1/250s) and requires manual control of power output. The FJ400 SE is a great option for indoor studio setups.
What are the Recycling Times for the FJ400 II vs the FJ400-SE?
The FJ400 II recycles in 0.9 seconds at full power. This time improves with lower power levels.
Similarly, the FJ400-SE offers 1-second recycle in Fast Mode and 2.8 seconds in Stable Mode, both at full power. With these recycle times also improving at lower power levels.
Switching to Stable Mode on the FJ400-SE reduces power draw and helps prevent tripped breakers during multi-strobe use.
Is the FJ400-SE Compatible with the FJ Triggers and FJ80 Series Speedlights?
You can assign the FJ400-SE to groups and channels controlled by any FJ trigger or FJ80 speedlight in HOST mode, and use wireless manual control or sleep mode. However, if you select HSS or TTL on your trigger, the FJ400-SE will default to its last manual setting. Its display will not reflect TTL adjustments made on the host unit.
Which FJ400 Model is Best for my Needs?
If you need TTL, HSS, Freeze sync, or require wireless portability, the FJ400 II is your best choice. It’s ideal for wedding, action, and location shooters. The FJ400-SE is best suited for controlled environments like studio portraits or product work where manual power control and standard sync speeds are sufficient.
